Inspired Artist
The artist I'm inspired by is Paola Delfín. She comes from Cancun, Mexico and paints grey scale murals that have meanings of community and feminism within the city. Paola was raised in Cancun and watched the city change overtime to a popular tourism site, and so she wanted to preserve and introduce elements of her culture through her murals.
Within these art pieces, I find how she turns the beauty of humans into a meaning deeper than face value. Paola experiments with the abstract elements of emotions and the realism that comes with her human portraits. The amount of skill it takes to make large murals is also very admirable. To get the proportions correct and having consistency throughout the whole piece takes lots of perserverence and her brush strokes reflect this.
The aspect that draws me towards the art pieces is how each individual she paints is so different yet beautiful in their own way. Paola provides context to these different subjects in her pieces through things like their appearence, the background, and how they interact with the background. With this in mind, she's able to create almost life like stories with her murals. |
Charcoal, Pen, and Pencil Drawings
I made 3 pieces with 3 different mediums under the theme of Christianity. I grew up in a Christian household and Christianity was an anchor that I could always rely on in life whenever I felt lost. I personally believe that God created life. I used the flexibility of the beauty in life in order to envision my pieces.
The title of this piece was "Candid"; I chose this title because it's of a bare man and the lack of clothing can often leave people in a vulnerable, honest state because it allows 'flaws' like scars to be revealed. I view physical flaws that humans have in a positive way because it's apart of what makes us unique, and the story behind these features are often complex and intriguing.
The parts of this piece I like is the areas that have hair, but I could improve on the overall detail and proportions of this piece. I would make the hand larger and the jaw of the man smaller in order to make the head size look more reasonable.

The title of this piece is "Into the Woods" because this was based off a photo I took of a trail that I often walk behind my house. The ground is mossy, the trees are tall and sparse, allowing for plenty of sunlight to illuminate the trail.
In this piece, I like how I was able to use horizontal lines in order to draw the trees and their shadows, but i'd like to improve on making the lines in this piece more consistent and less wobbly.

Value Shading Warm Up-
Before starting the pencil sketch, my group worked together on shading a sphere using different kinds of sketching pencils in order to learn value and shading. Within this experience, I enjoyed seeing how the part of the sphere that was opposite of the light source got progressively darker, then suddenly had a lighter part near the edge- the reflected highlight. Next time, i'd improve the shape of the shadow, and i'd also make the highlight of the sphere more visible.

Painting Unit
My drawing unit piece is of a Greek-styled sculpture which a portion of his face humanized. This is what made me name the piece "Personified". I blocked in the basic colors of the piece in acyrlic paint and I'm now in the process of going over the piece in oil paint in order to add detail and texture. I plan on doing this by adding small brushtrokes to give the stone more wear and tear. Although Greek sculptures are often smooth marble, they still do have flaws in the stone that differenciates it from more seamless textures like skin.
I made sure to put some element of emphasis on the flaws of the stone/skin in order with the use of shadows and texture. I did this with the intention of showing that despite features that we may consider flaws, they're a part of nature and it can give a certain element of beauty.
The thing that inspired this piece is my love for human portraits and sculptures. They often potray humans in a graceful lightx while leaving space for candid features to shine through and enhance the piece. I tried to show this in my piece with the use of blending. I did my best to soften the marble with the oil paints, and I'm currently in the process of softening the flesh.
Something about this piece I enjoy is the shadows on the side of the face. It added contrast and I enjoy the surreal feel it gives the piece. Next time I'd improve on the angle of the head/proportions. They were slightly affected by the position I held my canvas at and the roughness of the canvas made me afraid to make major changes to the sketch. I need to make the head more tilted in order for some of the features more proportional.

Portrait Project
For the portrait project, I decided to draw my friend, Randy. As of 4/26/20, I've completed the basic sketch and plan to add more detail through color pencil because often, the color pencil will blur the penciled-in details (and it'll make the color murky). I plan on using PrismaColor pencils because it allows for layering and blending, so it'll allow me to experiement with different lighting effects on the skin while giving an opague color.
